My great grandfather x 3 Michael Freeman appears in the 1871 census for Bolton, Lancashire living as a lodger in an Irish household and working as a labourer. His birthplace was Ireland and his age 21. On 3rd July 1871 he married Annie McAlroy in St Marie's R.C.Chapel Bolton. His age is given as 22. His deceased father Thomas Freeman was a labourer. Michael and Annie had 4 children together, Margaret, Mary, Luke and Ellen. Unfortunately, Michael was sentenced to six weeks hard labour in Strangeways Prison, Manchester in March 1877 for stealing two clogs in Halliwell, Bolton. From prison records I know he was 5 foot 7, weighed 11 stone 6 on admission, had a fresh complexion, brown hair and grey eyes. He had a cut on the back of his left hand, another on his right temple and a scar inside his right wrist. He described himself as Irish and said he was born in Roscommon. His religion was Roman Catholic and he had had no education. He gave hs usual address as 57 Livingstone St. Bolton where he lived with his wife Ann and (then) 3 children. Michael died in May 1879 aged 30 and was buried in the Roman Catholic section of Tonge Cemetery, Bolton.
