  • Hi Patricia, thank you for your comment. Yes, I've found a good bit of information on Michael (the name he used) since he arrived in America, and I've visited the town he settled in South Carolina. But I was hoping to eventually find something about his life in Ireland, before he migrated. He was my 4th-great-grandfather, and had quite an interesting life, it seems. :)

    “The Irish Linen Board published a list of nearly 60,000 individuals in 1796.  Spinning wheels were awarded based on the number of acres planted. People who planted one acre were awarded 4 spinning wheels and those growing 5 acres were awarded a loom. 

    Here are the Gaffneys in Longford listed in the Flax Growers List. Three were in Granard. One was William, which was the name of Michael's father.
