Michael H. King was born in 1835 to Hugh and Margaret (McCauley) King in County Cavan, Ireland, parish unknown. In 1842 Hugh emigrated to America and made his home in Phoenixville, Pennsylvania. His wife and children joined him in 1847. Michael had a younger brother Hugh, also born in County Cavan and two more brothers, Frank and John, born in Pennsylvania. Michael's father, Hugh does not appear in any census after 1850. Michael relocated to Des Moines, Iowa in the early 1850's with his brother Hugh and his mother followed around 1860. Michael married Rose Cassady (born in County Monaghan) in 1860. They had 8 children: Hugh, Mary, Rose, Margaret, Michael, Alice, Katherine and Estella.
