Michael Higgins was born (in Clonbur)  approx 1806 and died in 1881 also in Clonbur .. He had a brother Patrick who married locally . The Higgins brothers married the Kearns sisters ( of Westport ) . Michael & Catherine ( died 1872 ) had 2 sons Patrick & James (1845-1890) , 3 daughters Honoria (1840-1916),Delia (1847-1916)  & Eleanor (1849-1883). From Michael Higgins will Patrick emigrated to America and his whereabouts were unknown , James married locally +Mary Mellet ( 1845 -1877 ) had one daughter Catherine Mary  b 1877 who married a McCarthy ( born Cork 1876 d 1943 Dublin)

Only Honoria married + John Casey - which is where I come in , John died in 1890's and Honoria + 2 daughters Mary Kate & Cecilia moved to Galway Town and are recorded in Galway( Salthill) in 1893 !

Following Catherine Higgins death in 1872 ( buried in Rosshill , Clonbur) beside her b-in-law Patrick) Michael Higgins employed a Mrs Walsh to care for the home , in Clonbur

According to Griffiths Valuation, Michael Higgins leased several lots of land in the Clonbur area , and also Tawnaleen  over in the Maam region . From my reading of GV I think Michael Higgins had his main residence in Rusheen , (Clonbur Village ?)

My research has been conducted over many years and at this stage has come more or less to a stand still .

Would love to pursue this further if any Clonbur natives can throw some light . I know little or nothing about Patrick Higgins (Michaels brother ) . He was married , as his headstone in Rosshill mentions his wife and family. As I haven't visited Rosshill for some time , these flat headstones are overgrown at this time but I managed to take some photos some years ago which keeps the story alive .

Michael & Patrick had a sister who married a Gorham in Clifden , but died in 1840's . He married again and had several sone who all became doctors inc Pip Gorham who died in Clifden The original family also were related to the Kings in Clifden

  • Hi there,

Do you know which  Mrs Walsh Michael Higgins employed a to care for the home in Clonbur? My great grandmother Norah (Honora) Walsh was from Clonbur.  Her parents were John Walsh and Mary Comer.  They had many children that emigrated to the US including my Great Grandmother.  Only their bachelor son Martin remained in Ireland as far as I can tell.

Let me know if any of this rings a bell.  I was last in the area in Oct / Nov of 2019 and have many photos of headstones etc from Ross Hill Cemetery
