  • Do you have any details of what part of Kilkenny Michael was from?  Hogan is quite a common name in Kilkenny. Or any more info at all related to Kilkenny? I am an Ireland XO volunteer and my parents come from South Kilkenny.  I have shared your info with a Joan Hogan born in Sth Kilkenny, now living in LA.  She is in her 80's.  If I hear anything I will get back to you.  Eamon Aylward

  •  Hi the additional information that was found for me includes:

Father: William Hogan, Mother Bridget Mullin married at St. Patrick's church Castleinch Townland, Kilkenny county on February 4, 1838.  Other children included Sally(1839), John (1844), Margaret (1844) and Joanne (1853)

  • I found the Marriage record on ROOTSIRELAND.IE    Bridget's surname is recorded as "Mullins" not "Mullin".  There were two witnesses Thomas Hogan & Margaret Mullins.  The record records William and Bridget as Roman Catholic.

William & Bridget's Family - Baptism Records: St. Patrick's RC Church

    Sally - 2nd March 1839 - Godparents:  John Cove & Margaret Mullins

    John - 30th Jan 1844 - Godparents: Laurence Mullins & Ellen Murphy

    Margaret - 2nd June 1849 - Godparents: Michael Murphy & Sally Hogan

    Joanne - 15th May 1855 - Godparents:Charles Nolan & Mary Walsh

WILLIAM HOGAN:   Given 1838 as the year of marriage, I searched for the Baptism of William Hogan from c. 1800s.  I found Baptisms for 16 people named William in those years and this William below was the only one who was Baptised in St. Patrick's, in Castleinch.  The others all baptised in different locations.  It is not 100% proof that this William is the one we are looking for but in all probablity this is him.  Because William's mother is not recorded it makes it a bit difficult to find siblings.  I checked all the Baptisms where Michael Hogan was the father and while 18 entries were found, none of them were baptisms in St. Patrick's

Williams parents and Baptism of Siblings:

William - 10 Sept 1814 - Parents: Michael Hogan & mother not recorded - Godparents: Ned Hudson & Ellinor O'Donnell - Address is given as Bluntfield. (ie Bluntfield, Castleinch)

BRIDGET MULLINS:   I checked on the Baptism of Bridget Mullins from 1815 and would you believe only one came up (It was 16 for William) which looks like the Bridget we are looking for but again we cannot be 100% sure.   I checked all the Baptisms where James Mullins was the father and while 18 entries were found, none of them were baptisms in St. Patrick's

Bridget - 28 Jan 1812 - Parents: James Mullins & mother not recorded - Godparents: Patrick McEvoy & Anstice Donnelly - Address is given as Currawne (ie Currawne, Castleinch)

Perhaps a Sister: Elizabeth Mullins:  11 March 1807 - Parents: James Mullins & mother not recorded - Godparents: James Keefe & Margaret Mc Donnell - Address is given as Curane which is a different spelling but very similar to the name of the Townland for Bridget.

Perhaps a Brother: Thomas Mullins:  06 Jan 1810 - Parents: James Mullins & mother not recorded - Godparents: Judy O'Flannagan is only one recorded, - Address is given as just Castleinch.

All these records are available to view on https://www.rootsireland.ie/

I think that we can safely conclude that you now know the parish where your Michael Hogan came from and where he was married.  I am sure someone with more local knowledge would be able to identify the local townland called Curane or Currawne, and possibly the farm or house if it is still standing.  Without a little more local knowledge and direction, I doubt if we can get much further with Michael's Siblings.

I could not find any record of Michael Hogan being born in Kilkenny on April 7th 1848.  I searched for him inserting his name and that of both his parents but no record appeared.. I checked in Ancestry and the only record of his birth on this date was on the King family tree where no source was given for this fact.

I am afraid that this is as far as I can go.  Hope it is of some help.

  • In the 2nd last paragraph, I was referring to Williams siblings and marriage and not Michael's.  Apologies.
