  • Hello,

I am wondering if you can assist me. My great grandfather, Michael Kelly, was born Sept 1857 and died Feb. 27, 1897 in Limerick City. They lived at Arthurs Quay. I believe he and his father and brother (both named John Kelly) had a boot shop at 36 Patrick St in Limerick. Michael's wife was Mary Gallagher who later remarried Cornelius Kennelly. Mary moved to the U.S. in 1937 after Cornelius died to join her son John Kelly (my grandfather) who had come over in 1911 . My questions are as follows:

    1. Per his death certificate, Michael died on Feb 27, 1897 at the Limerick Workhouse. I have not been able to find any records related to where he was buried. I have checked several online sources including the Mount Saint Lawrence Cemetary archives and other available cemetary records in Limerick.  Any suggestions regarding where or how I might look for his burial records?  Note I was able to find that Mary Gallagher's mother, Mary (Boyle) Gallagher, was buried at Mount Saint Lawrence in 1917.

    2. Would there be any records related to the boot shop at 36 Patrick St. Limerick? Michael's brother John I believe lived and worked at 36 Patrick St until his death in 1928. I believe this whole block is now the Arthurs Quay Shopping Centre which was built in 1989.

    3. My grandfather John Joseph Alphonsus Kelly was born Jul 29, 1893 in Limerick. His civil birth record (from Rootsireland) lists his name as Alphonsus John Kelly and address as Arthurs Quay.  Its a mystery to me why his name is listed as it is on the civil birth record. Actually I could not find where he uses the name Alphonsus in any other records, except in certain records including his gravestone his name appears as "John Joseph A. Kelly".  Would there be any additional records of his birth?

I have about 100 other questions but I will spare you for now.  Thanks in advance for your help.

    Kind Regards,

    Jim

  • Hi Sheila

Thanks very much for your message. i have a death record for a Michael Kelly, a shoemaker, who died Feb 27 1897 at the Limerick Workhouse.  Although not certain, this is the best match i have found regarding his death. I have John Kelly, your grandfather (lived at 36 Patrick St) as first being married to Catherine Bothwick and then after she died he remarried to Catherine Sheehy. Does this match your records? May I ask the name of your parents? Are you on Ancestry or have you done a DNA test?  Thank you for reaching out.

    Kind Regards,

    Jim
