Back to List

Michael McAweeney/McAweeny possible year of birth 1824/1827 Kiltubidd Leitrim.

On the 6th March 1846 he was convicted of the offence Appearing Armed, Unlawful Assembly and compelling to quit along with Francis McPartlan, John Grieve, Owen & Francis Reynolds and John Leddy. Michael and the other young men were sentenced to transportation to Van Diemens Land (Tasmania, Australia) for 7 years. They were transported on the Lord Auckland convict ship. The Lord Auckland arrived in VDL 25th August 1846.

Michael went on to marry and own property in Tasmania (VDL). One of his sons Michael Jnr is my Great Grandfather. By the time of his marriage his surname becomes McQueeney.

I would love any information about his parents, siblings, date of birth etc.

Thanks Kimbra McQueeney

Additional Information
Date of Birth 1st Jan 1824 (circa)

  • Hi Kimbra, did you find any more info on your gg Mcqueeney? I also am searching for info on my gg Grandfather Michael Mcqueeney, born Ireland about 1827. He went to US though, sometime in the 1850's? He vanishes after 1860 census in Nashua Maine. My have died in American Civil War? Maybe they where related? I do notice on my searches for Mcqueeney in Ireland that most come from County Leitrim? If you have found information on his family I would be interested?

    Thank you.

  • Sorry Mark your relative  has no connection to my Michae McAweeney who was transported to Tasmania Australia in 1846 his surname by the time he married changes to McQueeney .  Good luck with your research.

  • Hi Kimbra, did a little more research on my McQueeney after I found out his wife's maiden name. They have his name spelled Macweeny. Married Mohill Parish County Leitrim. I also see Kiltubidd is part of that Parish. I think they could have been cousins. Patricia on this site found the info for me the same day. Any way I wanted you to know what I found. Check out Mcqeeney/Mcgarry post from Dec 4th. Take Care.
