Very little is known of Michael in Ireland, but he shows up for the first time in the summer of 1847 in Quebec, presumably having passed through Grosse Ile in one of the worst years in it's existence. That fall he was married at the cathedral in town, and had at least 3 children before falling off the pages of history again. DNA matches suggest his McDermott line likely came from Black Mountain / Kiltyclogher in Letrim, and is related to those that settle in Port Huron and Boston.
