Michael Murphy was born ca. 1815.

Michael Murphy married Eleanor (Ellen) Toal at the Catholic Church, Newry, on 23 April 1836. their first child, Mary Ann Murphy was baptised in the Catholic Church, Newry, 11 March 1838. They may also have had a son, Michael, who died as an infant during the voyage to Sydney. This is recorded in the ship's register.

In 1841, Michael and Ellen migrated fom Liverpool, UK, to Sydney, NSW, Australia onboard the ship "England." Michael and Ellen travelled with Ellen's parents, Hugh and Ann Toal, and Ellen's sister Ann Toal.

Michael and Ellen settled in Liverpool, NSW. He worked first as a currier and groom before taking over a tannery. Following Michael's death, Ellen continued the tannery for several years with her sons Joseph and and Hugh. 

Michael and Ellen had at least 9 children: Mary Ann, Michael(?), Margaret, Joseph, Hugh, Michael, Ellen, Peter, and William Henry.

Michael died at Liverpool, 23 March 1855 and is buried in the Liverpool Cemetery, now known as the Liverpool Pioneer Cemetery next to Ellen's parents.

Michael and Ellen's youngest son, William Henry Murphy, died 20 September 1856 and is buried with Michael.

Ellen Murphy died  13 May 1866. She is buried with Michael in the Liverpool Cemetery.
