Michael was the son of Michael O'Donnell and Ellen Fitzgerald, who married in 1850 and live at Ballyin. Michael married Catherine Lyons 14 February 1893 in Lismore. They lived at Monatarrive, which had been in Ellen Fitzgerald's family. Catherine was one of 9 children of Patrick Lyons and Mary Walsh of Ballysaggart.
