Michael Burke was born in County Roscommon, Ireland. Grave marker says born about 1806, census info varies. Census records indicate that Michael and Winifred's first child was born in Maryland in about 1850. Michael (noted as age 27) and wife Eliza Winnan Burke. They are in District 10, Allegany, Maryland with daughter Bridget and Michael's brother, Edward (age 23). 1860 census--Pruntytown, Taylor Co., VA census--includes Michael (says born abt 1915) and Winifred with five children (Bridget, Mary A., Margaret, Eliza, Edward).
His occupation was listed as farmer, apparently owning his land, his real estate valued at $880. (Note: the part of VA they lived in is now in WVA.) Michael's family is listed in the 1870 and 1875 census for Marshall Co. KS. Michael is listed with his children Catherine, Michael and Ellen in the 1880 census in that same location. (His wife died in 1875). Michael's grave marker (and cemetery records) at St. Joseph Catholic cemetery in Lillis, KS indicate that he was 78 yrs at the time of his death and that he was born in Roscommon County Ireland. He likely was NOT born in 1806, as his age on censuses show ages that say he was born between 1815 and about 1825.
