  • Hi,

My great-great-grandmother was Ann Devaney 1835-1878, married to Michael Naughton.  I'm wondering if her parents were Owen and Catherine Devaney.  She was born in Ireland and moved to Preston Lancashire England.  Her son Michael Naughton born in Preston immigrated to the US in 1881 and my mother's side of the family descended from there.  Turns out I am all Irish according to 23andme with a strongest connection to County Mayo so this would make sense.

  • Hello Adele

I think your great-great-grandmother Ann Devaney 1835-1878 maybe related but not Owen's & Catherine's child.

My G G Grandparents Owen and Catherine McGurn/Devaney married in 1841 in or near Balla (south of CastleBar) Co. Mayo Ireland.

In 1850 the came to the USA lived in Pittston PA. In 1857 they moved to MN homesteaded in Woodland Township Wright County Minnesota and started farming.

Their oldest son my G Grandfather Thomas Devaney was born 1845 and baptized in Balla (south of CastleBar) Co. Mayo Ireland.

He married in 1871 my G Grandmother Mary E. Neaton born 1849 in Jeffersonville Indiana ( sometimes it was spelled Neighton in old US census records).

    In Watertown Carver Co. Minnesota.

Her father was Denis Neaton 1818 Dawn Co. Louth Ireland. Her mother was Mary Kennedy  1816 Borrisokane, Tipperary, Ireland.

Both sides of my family came from Ireland between 1830's and 1850.

When I did my DNA with Ancestry it shows 99% Irish, 1% Scottish.

  • Hi Tom

Thanks for the quick response, especially to set me straight!  If I had looked at the information you posted a little more closely I could have seen the dates were off.  Nice that you are able to go back this far.  Most of my great grandparents were born in Ireland in the 1870s and 80s (Neary, Naughton, Dunne, Hanahan, Fahey) and I know little about their parents.  If you find out more about your Devaney's I would be interested.  Maybe Owen Devaney had a brother or cousin?

    thanks

    Adele
