Owen Hughes 1807

Back to List

Owen Hughes was born about 1807 in Louth. He was tried in Louth on 10 March 1830 and found guilty of Horse stealing and sentenced to life in Australia.

He arrived on the Ship "Hercules" on 31 October 1830. He worked in the Hunter Valley region and was granted a ticket of leave in June 1841 and a conditional pardon on 15 February 1849. He married Mary Skinner (nee Doherty) three days later on 18 February. They had 4 children Thomas Alphonsus (1849-1907) Ann (1851-1851) Owen (1852-1892) and Ann Agnes (1854-1938). Owen died on 14 October 1855 in the William River at Seaham. An inquest was held into his death which found he died from accidental drowning due to the effects of intoxication.

I would like to find out anything about Owen prior to his arrival in Australia, especially his family.
