John J. Herlihy 1842

John Joseph Herlihy immigrated to the USA from Ballygriffin, County Cork in October 1850. He was 8 years old. His father William Herlihy had already immigrated to Yonkers, New York and was making preparations for his young family to join him.  John made the journey with his mother Margaret Walsh Herlihy and his siblings Bridget and William as well as assorted aunts and uncles.

Once in Yonkers, NY John lived there for the rest of his life. He and his family were active and early members of St. Mary's RC Church and in fact John was one of the first students in St. Mary's School. During the Civil War he worked in the Jocelyn Munitions Factory in Stonington CT where he met and married Ellen Condon. After the war they moved back to Yonkers and had 7 children 4 of whom lived into adulthood. John owned and operated a retail crockery store for 30 years.

He died at the age of 84.
