Hello...I too have a Patrick Collins born about the same year. Or in 1838. One thing I learned about the Collins family was the surname was at one time Colleran. It was changed when some of the emigrants came to the USA to sound "more American." I have both names on my tree. My great great grandmother used both of them and her married name. Confusing!
One person I communicated with said he was a Collins and Colleran kept coming up in his dna lists. My information seems to have substaniated this quirk.
My Patrick was from County Sligo, near Charleston and Tubbercurry. At the time, it was also considered part of Co Mayo because the towns were close together.
I know my family had relatives out east, and in particular in PA. Let me work on this a bit.
If you have access to ancestry.com or wiki tree I have some of my family members listed.
My great great grandmother was Mary Collins/Colleran Meehan who also was born in County Sligo, Ireland and settled in Augusta, GA. Mary was born about 1844 and she had a sister in GA too. Her name was Bridget E Collins/Colleran Gallaher Geraty. She was born in 1842.
Mary had to work as an indentured servant when she came to America and worked for a large family in Savannah, GA putting her sons in an orphange until she could get them out.
I hope this helps. There are a lot of Luke, Bernard, John and James in the tree---I wish a few of them would have had some unusual forenames. They would have been easier to locate.
