I am seeking information on my GGGG parents Patrick Fox and Rose Carney.

Their Daughters Catherine (b c1830) and Sophie (b c1847) left Dublin for Australia prior to 1850. Patrick and Rose may have migrated around the 1850.

I plan to visit the area in mid- September this year and would appreciate any information about the families and their descendants.

 Thanks Peter O’Donnell

  • Hi Peter, I too am trying to trace Fox's in Ireland, mine seem to be based around Killeigh in Offaly but i've come across many records with similar names from Dublin.

Christopher Fox BIRTH ABT 1806 • Killeigh, Offaly, Ireland DEATH unknown but 1847-1860 MARRIED 4th Nov 1836 in Philipstown to Margaret Byrne BIRTH abt 1806 • Ireland

DEATH 15 OCT 1881 • Keilor, Victoria, Australia.

They had 4 children that I am aware of, Bridget, Michael, Mary and Hanoria. Margaret was listed as a widow when she came to Australia with their son Michael who is my 3rd great grandfather. He married an Irish woman in Australia, Rose Reilly from Westmeath/Meath. They settled around Keilor in Melbourne.

My family and I are visiting Ireland in September this year :)

  • Hi Grayfox80

We had a great time searching for my Irish Ancestors and travelled from one end of Ireland to the other. We met some wonderful people on the way. People were keen to help but my family left Ireland in 1850's which made tracing their roots very difficult. I did learn a lot about the place and time  but nothing specific in respect to the individuals. This was largely due to the lack of information I had and the long time between their departures and now. We met a number of the contacts made via Ireland Reaching Out and they took the time to show us around the areas of interest, give me more leads than I have been able to follow up and explained the events of the time.

I can only say that the experience was wonderful, the education priceless and the people went beyond any of our expectations.

As for the Fox Family I was unable to make any headway in Dublin as I had little information to help me. However, we plan to make our third trip to Ireland over the next two or three years and will in the meantime undertake more research.

I am very interested in the history of the Fox family in Australia. I suspect that it was close

Catherine Fox married John Joyce in Adelaide in 1851, then traveled to eastern NSW by foot giving birth to Mary Ann, Louise, Hubert along the way. By 1862 Catherine and John had reached Binalong where a fouth child John was born but died (1862) In the same year John died and Catherine made her way to Lucknow where in 1865 she married Joseph Campbell. Catherine then travelled with her family to Bright Victoria where she gave birth to a daughter Isabella Campbell. The family then made their way back to Urana where Catherine died in 1890.Catherine is buried with a number of generations of the Fox family.

If you are interested I would be please to exchange more information of the Family In Australia but enjoy your trip. We did

    Peter

  • What an amazing woman Catherine must have been! What a journey.

I've always wondered about other Fox's in Australia and whether there is any connection. When they came over from Ireland they settled in Keilor, and majority still live around there and in Melbourne. My grandfather Michael Fox and his wife Joan Taylor left Keilor and purchased a farm in Bunbartha Victoria and I grew up in Shepparton.

My Fox's were big on using family names, so there are a few called Patrick, John, Michael, Thomas, Rose, Margaret, Catherine, Mary, Bridget.

Have you had your DNA tested at all? I did mine through Ancestry and have connected with cousins who I know are from my paternal line living in America so I know that someone must have gone there rather than Australia.
