Patrick Gahan was sentenced in Dublin to seven years and transportation to Australia on 6 March 1840. He had been convicted of stealing a sack and other items and had a previous conviction of 3 months. He sailed on the ship 'King William' which arrived in NSW on 17 August 1840. According to the information given on the Convict Indents, he was aged 15 at the time. His occupation was listed as errand boy..

It's unclear where he spent his first years in Australia, but he was granted a Ticket of Leave on 15 July 1845 and assigned to the Yass district. This meant that he could receive payment for his work as a farm labourer, but must remain in the designated area so he could be easily located. He worked on a property called St. Omers near Braidwood in NSW. In 1853 he married a widow Mary Harrington (nee Kelly) who had one young son. They remained at St. Omers until about 1870 when they moved to Boro. Patrick and Mary had nine children together (ten in total counting Mary's first son).

Mary died of puerperal fever on 15 November 1874. Patrick later moved to Tarago, near Goulburn.where he died in 1899.
