Somers trace family line I am trying to trace my family Irish history. Both my father's parents (Francis Somers borne of PaulsTown Co. Kilkenny Eire and his father Francis Somers and Catherine Somers Nee Brophy of Kilkenny Ireland) came from Kilkenny and we know his father was killed by Black and Tans we have been told. I'm now in my 50s and there has been secrecy about our Somers family from Kilkenny and Dublin. From South Wexford or Waterford etc and moved about we been told. Were Irish language speakers. He had several brothers my grandfather (educated at St Ciarán's College Kilkenny) ... if my great grandfather is one of this line I would like to know. I know my family member names are also Walsh, Brophy, Constgain (I think spelt) etc. Granddad was born 189x? he immigrated to the UK to Liverpool then to Canterbury in late 1930s. We still have family in Kilkenny, Waterford, Wexford and Dublin on Somers side I have been told and my nana's side Brophy Walsh Costigen in Kilkenny, Mayo, Galway Kinsail. My name is Carmelo (Ned) Somers I have dual British-Irish nationality and Spanish Citizenship also. I was born in the UK in Canterbury 1971. My father was born in Paulstown, Gorwan, Co. Kilkenny Eire 1935 and his father we are told is from Kilkenny. Granddad Francis Somers was quite secretive about his family line. See above. I know he had many siblings but he always says he was abandoned by his mother and his aunt Brough him up in Kilkenny when not at St Ciaran's college Kilkenny before working as a farm hand. His father worked for Cill Channiagh Kilkenny Council I believe and we were told he was murdered by the Black and Tans? Some dispute of rental? Never been told a clear story. I know he has family migrated to USA, Canada, maybe Scotland? he migrated to Liverpool in 1937/38 circa before coming to Canterbury Sturry Road to work in the Convent as a handy person and enventually farm hand and worked at St Augustine's Hospital in Chartham near Canterbury (no longer exists) mental asylum as farm hand manager before retiring living in Bekesborne near Bridge Canterbury before returning to Kilkenny Innostaige Co Kilkenny. I lived in Dungarvan Gorwan Co. Kilkenny for a few years in 1990s to 1996 before returning to Canterbury (studied in Stirling Uni) ... I would love to find out about our family has it has been shrouded in secrecy for so long. Many thanks, Ned (Carmelo).
