Patrick Joseph Ryan Murphy enrolled in All Hallows Seminary for missionaries. He was recruited by the French Bishop of Vincennes, Indiana to minister to Irish families who were building railroads and becoming farmers. He was ordained a Catholic priest on March 24, 1847. He was pastor of St. Mary Church, Barr Township, Daviess Co., Indiana from 1848 to 1858. He transferred to the Diocese of Chicago in 1858. He was assigned to Immaculate Conjception Church in Mendota, Il from 1858 to 1860. He was then assigned to Rock Island, IL. He enlisted into the Illinois Infantry as a chaplain in 1863. He was discharged on Aug. 12, 1864. His last assignment was St. James Church on Praire Ave., Chicago, IL. He died in Vincennes, IN, on Sept. 10, 1869.
