Patrick was born in Kingston, NY to James Fitzgerald and Honora Wade of County Roscommon. His parents traveled to the US from Roscommon around 1848 with their first child, Esther. Francis was born in New York City in 1849 and Patrick followed in 1851. James and Honora had 10 children with 7 surviving. James worked in the bluestone quarry and all of his 6 sons joined him at one time or another. Patrick was very active in city politics and ran a saloon for awhile. He married Mary Ann Phalen in 1884 and they had 8 children with only his 4 sons survivng. Patrick and Mary Ann followed the traditional naming pattern. Their first son was James after Patrick's father. The second son was Michael after Mary Ann's father. The third and fourth sons were named John and Joseph after Patrick's brothers. (Mary Ann only had one brother - James.) He died in 1916 and is buried in St. Mary's Cemetery, Kingston, NY.
