Patrick was born near Ardgroom, at Cappacluherane. He was one of about 8 children of Jack McCarthy and Nell Hartnett. Almost all of his siblings emigrated to the USA. (I don't know if perhaps his parents did as well?) He married Mary Harrington of Eyeries. She and their two children, John and Marie, stayed in Ireland, while he travelled to Butte, Montana, to work in the copper mines. He became an American citizen, but returned home for the last couple of years of his life. He and Mary had another daughter, Margaret, who died when she was only a few months old - just days after Patrick died in February 1926.
