Patrick O’NEIL immigrated to New Zealand on the vessel British Empire which sailed from Gravesend, London 11 July 1875 and arrived Auckland 7 October 1875. Patrick was an assisted immigrant and the passenger list stated he was a 25 year old labourer from Co. Clare. Another assisted immigrant on this vessel was Mary Slattery a 30 year old Servant from Co. Clare. Patrick O’Neil and Mary SLATTERY married in Auckland 12 December 1875. Patrick and Mary had three children; Bridget born 1876, Honora 1878 and William Patrick 1880. Birth registration records for her children showed Mary was unable to write. Mary died 12 October 1885, her death certificate recorded her age as 38. This would suggest Mary was born in Co. Clare c1847. Her death certificate states her father James Slattery. Mother’s name not known. Patrick’s parents are recorded in two documents as James O’Neil and Mary Redman/Redmond. It was also noted that Patrick’s father was a butcher. Patrick’s age has been recorded on various documents suggesting her was born around 1848-1850. Patrick died 6 November 1912 at Auckland, his death certificate stated his age as 66 years. On an official document created a year before he died, Patrick gave information that he was born at sea near Malta. This piece of information has not been proved. Family notes state that Patrick was one of six brothers who all emigrated from Co. Clare, Ireland around the same time; Patrick choose New Zealand, while the other brothers emigrated to Canada, America and Australia. Where was Patrick from in Co. Clare?
