Patrick S. Carey 1832

Back to List

Son or brother of John Carey of Belmullet.  Nephew or brother of Bryan Carey of Belmullet.  Patrick S. Carey was a Fenian in the 1860's and ran two hotels in Dublin.  We believe he left Ireland in the 1880s, after the Phoenix Park murders.  His wife, Rosa Bracken and their 4 or 5 adult children also left with them.  We are searching for any descendants of John Carey, who ran the Erris Hotel or Bryan Carey, who built the Blacksod Lighthouse.

Additional Information

  • Yes.  You are correct Bryan Carey did marry Kate Lyons.  I think I have a copy of Bryan's obituary.  Bryan and Kate's granddaughter, Kathleen I believe, had a child Eileen Carey who was an actress in London..  Eileen Carey Reynolds married Sean O'Casey.  Eileen wrote a biography which I have a copy of somewhere. In that book she mentions her mother's family in Belmullet.  I think I have some other bit of research that also ties Eileen Carey to the Bryan Carey family.

Bryan's company constructed the Blacksod Lighthouse.  We were able to tour the inside of the lighthouse when we were in Belmullet a couple of years ago.

After some additional research we are pretty sure that Patrick S. Carey was a much younger brother of John Carey and Bryan Carey.

I have quite a bit of research, but I have not had the time to catalogue it all.

Is your family in the US?  We are in Detroit, MI.  I had been hoping to find some relatives of John, Bryan and Patrick who were still in Mayo, but to date have not had any success.
