  • Patrick Tyrrell is the gg grandfather of a DNA match of mine.  I am trying to research this line of her family to see if I can find a connection to my Conneely/Joyce/Lydon family.  I recently found the grave for Patrick and his father John on findagrave, the headstone said they were natives of Caltra, Co. Galway.  I am not sure if that is Caltra the townland or Caltra the DED.  Patricks parents were listed as John Tyrrell and Celia.  I am wondering if Celia may be Sarah.  When I was looking into the Civil records Peter and Sarah Grady had a daughter Sarah-  The wife Sarah Grady and the daughter Sarah Tyrrell (from birth record) were listed as Celia.  Could Celia be a nickname for Sarah?  Like Polly is for Mary?  There were 4 families I could find in the area-

    1) Peter Tyrrell (Miller) and Sarah Grady – Clonpee ( I couldn’t find a marriage record)

Martin born 14 Feb 1887 (listed as age 14 in 1901 census)

James Tyrrell born 28 March 1888 (listed as age 13 in 1901 census)

Bridget Tyrrell born 25 February 1890 (listed as age 11 in 1901 census)

John Tyrrell born 27 March 1892 (listed as age 9 in 1901 census)

Mary Tyrrell born 11 June 1894 (listed as age 7 in 1901 census)

Julia Tyrrell born 14 November 1896 (listed as age 5 in 1901 census)

Peter Tyrrell born 8 April 1899 ((listed as age 3 in 1901 census)

Sarah Tyrrell born 4 May 1901 (name listed as Celia in the 1911 census)

Patrick Tyrrell born 20 November 1903

Thomas Francis Tyrrell born 2 November 1906

Martin born 14 Feb 1887 – I believe mothers last name was grady he is listed with the other siblings above in the 1901 census.

    2) James Tyrrell (Miller) and Bridget Cannon – Clonpee (marriage would have been before civil registration began)

Patrick Tyrrell born 31 July 1865

    3) Patrick Tyrrell (his father Michael) and Elizabeth Gilmore (her father Thomas)– Married 31 Aug 1878

Martin Tyrrell born 12 May 1879 - Lurgan

Mary Ann Tyrrell born 20 March 1880 - Lurgan

Michael Tyrrell Born 23 May 1881 - Lurgan

Bridget Tyrrell born 30 June 1883 - Lurgan

Thomas Tyrrell born 29 December 1884 - Lurgan

John Tyrrell born 25 Oct 1886- Lurgan Elizabeth Tyrrell born 1 April 1888 - Lurgan

Patrrick Tyrrell born 29 September 1889 – Lurgan

James Tyrrell born 10 March 1892 - Lurgan

Catherine Tyrrell born 12 April 1894 – Clonpee

Peter Tyrrell born 13 June 1896 - Lurgan

Joseph Tyrrell born 5 July 1898 - Lurgan

4)John Tyrrell (Farmer and Miller) and Margaret Ryan - Greenville (marriage would have been before Civil registration began)

James Tyrrell born 20 Oct 1864

Celia Tyrrell born 20 June 1867

Bridget Tyrrell born 5 February 1870

John Thomas Tyrrell born 5 January 1873

    5) James Tyrrell (Miller) and Bridget Cannon – Clonpee (marriage would have been before civil registration began) Patrick Tyrrell born 31 July 1865

    6) Marriage of BARTHOLOMEW GOULDING (his father John) and ANNE TYRRELL (her father James) on 09 March 1886, Anne was from Clonpee

Does anyone know if there are church marriage and baptismal records online?

  • Hi Lynn,

Patrick Tyrell (1) is my great-grandfather....Bridget Tyrell is my grandmother, she married Patrick Keane and they lived in Doone House in Fohenagh parish.  I was not able to find any marriage or baptismal records online.  During one of my trips to Ireland the Fohenagh Parish Priest was able to show me many of them.  Its fun researching, but can also be very difficult as many of the names were recycled among the families, and it is hard to keep everyone straight.  Good luck in your research!  - Gerri

    Greetings from Mountbellew, Co Galway

My friend Barbara in Warrington, Lancashire is a descendant of Tyrrells in Ahascragh, the neighbouring parish to Caltra

    http://census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Galway/Ahascragh/Ervallagh…

The surname is rare with c 6 families recorded in the 1911 Census

My mother's cousin married a Tyrell from Monivea - a descendant Colin has done a DNA test

I admin the East Galway DNA & Genealogy group and would welcome you to join https://www.facebook.com/groups/555977884943692

  • Hello Martin!

May I ask you a question that you may be aware of?  Is it possible that records of that era were actually kept in Dublin City, Dublin instead of Galway?  I successfully find records of baptism and marriage in those files, for the Patrick and John Tyrrell that I have placed in my Tree. I find NO records for them in Galway...as Patrick married Catherine Nolan.  That is factual to my family, as my Aunt has actual pictures of Catherine and her daughter, Elizabeth, who was my Aunt's Grandmother.  The Patrick's in Galway have no record of Catherine Nolan as a wife.

    I appreciate your time.

  • Hi Sheila and Martin,

I just wanted to add some information which would help Martin answer Sheila's question.  Patrick Tyrrell the husband of Catherine Nolan was born sometime between 1831 and 1836.  The 1870 US census has him being born 1836, 1880 US Census says 1835 and his death record says 1831.  Catherine Nolan Tyrrell was born 1839/1840.  They had their first (or what we believe was their first child in Feb 1861 in Massachusetts.  I haven't been able to find a marriage record in Massachusetts so I believe they were married 1860 or before most likely in Ireland.

  • Hi Sheila and Lynn

Records would be local and for that time period would be parish baptismal or through land registration, rentals  and valuation eg Griffith's - all accessed locally, online or in the National Archives

The parish records for that time frame are accessible here Fohenagh https://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0331 or Caltra https://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0535 (free on familysearch.org, Paywall through rootsireland.ie or Ancestry / Findmypast

If you have uploaded your raw DNA to gedmatch the East Galway Ancestor Project will likely be able to help see if your Tyrrell roots are local

  • Hi Lynn

Just got a notice re this thread re Tyrell's if Clonpee. I knew Paddy Tyrell that lived in Clonpee. I think he died in the 1980's period....

There was an old mill also on the land. Vaguely remember it as a child. The house from memory was built in 1810 period, again I would need to look that up.

going back in time there was approx 8 or 9 houses at the back of Tyrell's. From memory...Dooleys, Booths/Kellys, Greallys. I think Martin Dooley worked in Tyrell's.  If I can assist further drop me an email galwayancestors@gmail.com

best of luck with your research
