My grandfather Peter Derham was born in Killashee on 30th April 1865. His father was Patrick Derham (also probably same name for 2 previous generations) and his mother was Ann Duignan/Degnan born in Kiltycarney, Leitrim. By 1867 the family had moved to Ballymahon (Shrule?) and a sister was born there. By 1869 they had moved to Athlone, Mardyke St.
The Derhams probably originated in Galway (a British Army recruitment document shows a Patk. Derham signed on in 1783). There was a history of enlistment in the British Army which probably explains how Patrick my ggfather ended up in/around Athlone, given the fortress there.
The family moved to England (Widnes, lancashire) about 1872. My gfather met there Briget Fitzsimon (a neice of his mother) who was visiting from Ireland. She was born in Edgeworthstown but came also from a Duignan/Degnan family from Leitrim (Lisduff).
I have never been to Ireland and there is now no-one left to ask about the family. I would like to know a bit more about Killashee and why my family might have been there and why they might have moved. When he built his house he named it Athlone.
When they lived in Ballymahon my ggparents took out a court case for non-payment of wages against two women named possibly Reid supposedly from 'Muck'. My family won the case. Family myth says they had to leave Ireland and come to England as a result of tensions with the 'lord of the manor' or more likely that case. All the family died and buried in England but some great uncles/aunts can't be traced.
