  • Could Robert Reilly be related to my great great great grandfather, Cornelius O'Reilly?  Corneilius was born in Mullagh in 1806.  He married Catharine McKenna in March, 1827, in Cavan.  They had 9 children.  The family immigrated to the U. S. about 1852.  Cornelius O'Reilly died on June 8, 1854, in Albany, NY.

I've spent all morning trying to make a connection but can't find anything. Thankyou for your suggestion.

  • Nellie, thanks for responding.  It was just a thought.  Mullagh was so small, it seemed like many people might be related or neighbors.  I seem to have dead-ended on my O'Reilly family in Cavan.

  • Do you know Robert's Fathers name by any chance ? My GGGG Grandfather was Mathew Reilly of Cloughballybeg or one of the other many spellings it was known as through the years. My G Grandmother was Margaret Reilly of The Gates Mullagh (Cloughballybeg) who married Felix McCabe.  Mathew was married to a Anne Halfpenny. I have the names of the Reilly family down through the years but as you will well know there was no shortage of Reilly's in that area.

  • I don't know Robert's father's name.  It's been so long since I posted this that I kind of forgot what prompted it originally.  I've been able to dig up additional ancestors on the McKenna side--it seems they were in Mullagh and Kilinkere.  I just don't know about Cornelius O'Reilly.  You're right--the O'Reilly name is not an advantage in this area.

  • My Father's cousin married a McKenna from Mullagh, another well known name in the village. My own G Grandfather came from Killinkere and moved down to Cloughballybeg. We are lucky that the census for Mullagh from 1821 survived but it is packed with Reillys and O'Reilly's and unless you know the trail you could be all over the place.

  • Oh, which McKenna did your father's cousin marry?  Yes, there were lots of McKennas in Mullagh, many of them related.  An O'Reilly 4th cousin, once removed, discovered James McKenna in the 1821 Census, which was a lucky break.  She's a good researcher, so maybe it was more than luck.  We're still working on our O'Reilly connection.  By the way, do you have a published family tree on any of the genealogy websites?

    Thanks,

Thanks for responding.  We do have a connection on the McKenna side.  The actor you mentioned is a distant cousin of mine.  I'll email you so you can send me an invitation to your family tree on Ancestry.  By the way, might you be related to Camilla Whyte?

    Sincerely,
