Migrated to/Born in Australia

Robert Sheehan was probably born in Youghal, Cork on 5 September 1830. His father was William Sheehan, thought to have been born in 1800 in Youghal Cork.

Robert emigrated to South Australia arriving in 1849 and married in Adelaide in 1852.

I am unable to find any definitive references to William Sheehan of Youghal or any reference to how Robert came to South Australia.  However, Robert's obituary in 1902 in Adelaide , South Australia states his father was from Youghal.

Robert Sheehan married Eliza Ewers in 1852 in Adelaide and their daughter Olive Emily Sheehan was my great grandmother who married William Alfred Holmes in 1883.

Hence I am keen to know more about my great great grandparents on her side and how they came to Australia.

    Greetings from IrelandXO,

Sorry for the long delay in answering your query.  The fact you are going back so far to early 1800's, records are very limited.  I have looked up Ancestery, only departures for a Robert Shean and Sheehan only depart from Belfast and Limerick.  We, here in Youghal and the surrounding area would have departed from Cobh, which back then was known a Queenstown and there is no record for this - also looked to see if Robert travelled to England and no joy there either.

    Keep safe

  • Many thanks for your efforts Phyl.

Ironically I was in Cobh around this time last year (we were attending the Cork Choral Festival), looking for information about my wife's family who had been 'transported' from Cobh to Australia.  At that time I was unaware of the Sheehan background, so missed an opportunity to look for myself. We suspect he may have been a sailor and possibly jumped ship in Australia, but that sort of information is very difficult to prove. I shall keep looking from this end.

    Best wishes

  • Hi from Sydney, Australia,

I am also a descendant of Robert Sheehan (1830-1902). His daughter, Eliza Priscilla Sheehan (married George Henry Browne), was my great grandmother. In my search, I have found that "Robert Sheehan sailed from Plymouth as an emigrant on the barque Charlotte Jane on 30/9/1851 arriving Adelaide on 13/1/1852. He was a carpenter and a Wheelwright." (https://christaupo.weebly.com/sheehan.html)

    Kind regards,

    Jennifer

  • Hi again... that link wasn't the correct one, sorry. It says that: (According to oral history Robert ran away from home to sea aged 12, landing in Australia 1849.)

I'll keep looking to find where I got that other information.

  • Thanks Jen. A number of people are looking for further info on Robert but he seems to have little recorded detail.
