Samuel Clugston 1835

Back to List

Born in Newtownhamilton in 1835. He immigrated to Australia on the vessel "Herald of the Morning" arriving in NSW June 23, 1858.  He married Jane McLean in 1863.  He obviously worked for Thomas S Mort (as in Goldsborough Mort and Co) who owned the Bodalla Estate which included the farms called "Comerang", "Trunketabella" where some of Samuel's 12 children were born and married - on the south coast of NSW. He died in 1915 at Myocum, near Mullumbimby, on the north coast of NSW, where he is buried.  He had a brother, Robert and a sister, Jane - who also immigrated to the south coast of NSW.  Their father was Thomas Clugston.

The Clugston's were skilled farmers, and I wonder because of the Clugston names I have found in Scotland, if they were Presbyterian farmers brought across to Northern Ireland in the1600-1700s. Does anyone have any further information on this in the Newtownhamilton area?
