Migrated to/Born in Australia

My Great-Great-Grandfather, MICHAEL KINCH, was born in September, 1794 in Arklow, Co Wicklow, the son of JOHN KINCH & MARY SPRIGG. I have no more details of his parents, but do know he had a brother Alexander born 1793 & a sister Sarah Mary born 1795 who died in 1871.

Michael married MARIA RUTH on 26 May 1826 in Rathdrum Parish , Co. Wicklow. She was born in Dec 1803 & christened 12 February 1804 in Rathdrum, Co. Wicklow. Her parents were Michael Ruth christened 15 September 1773, Rathdrum, Co. Wicklow & Sarah Bestall & they married 11 February 1802 Delgany Co. Wicklow.

Michael Kinch, a school master & Maria Ruth had 7 children -

  1. Sarah Ann born Wicklow, 1827, died 26 April 1904, Sydney Australia
  2. Alfred William (my great grandfather) born 21 May 1835 died 24 Jan 1941 ( I will give full details of him later)
  3. Emma Grace b.1836 Donnaghmore, d. Sydney Australia 2 June 1918
  4. Amelia born 15 Feb 1837 Kilcandra, Dungastown
  5. Maria Louisa b. 1839 Rathdrum d. 19 Oct 1847 Crosspatrick Co.Wicklow
  6. Frederick Henry b. 1840 Co Wicklow d. 23 October 1907 Heynestown
  7. Robert Thomas b.1843 Crosspatrick d. 25 Oct 1847 Crosspatrick.

Sarah Ann (1) arrived in Sydney Australia as an Assisted Immigrant on 3 February 1850 on the ship “Thomas Arbuthnot” She was 22 years old, a teacher born in Rathsaren, Co Wicklow, in good health & could read & write - her parents were given as Michael & Maria Kinch. She had no relatives in the Colony. Sarah married Reuben Tawyer in 1856 & they had 7 children. Both Sarah & Reuben are buried in the grounds of Gordon Anglican Church in Sydney NSW. I have copies of her letters home to her brother Alfred William which brings forth her loneliness for her family back in Ireland. I have to wonder why she ever left Ireland at such a young age & by herself as there is no record of anyone accompanying her on her shipping record.

Emma Grace (3) also a teacher & later school headmistress at Young NSW Australia school emigrated before her marriage to William Armstrong in 1873 at Grenfell NSW. Emma Grace returned to Ireland several times to bring her nephews & nieces to Australia. (See next generation for detail
