Immigrated to Newcastle NSW from Liverpool UK on ship "Bermondsey" arriving Apr 29 1855 with wife Anne (Hazlett) and children John, Robert, Sarah, 2nd eldest son George was left in Ireland and joined his family in 1866 when arrived with his Uncle John A.
Simon settled in Platsburg NSW now Wallsend NSW and he set up shop as a leather worker/bootmaker. He is buried with his wife in Old Wallsend Cemenery now in Shortland NSW.
Most of his family became coal miners.
I am looking for a Porteus Family in the area of Monea. I have a letter written about 1901 telling of the family. I am looking for the pareents of Rutherford Cathcart Hamiliton Porteus Rutherfort was born 01 July 1787 in the Castle( I assume he wasn't born in the actual castle) the father owned property there. The family moved to Maquiresbridge around 1800. The Father Porteus died there and his body went back to Monea and buried in a family vault in the old Church .Rutherford stayed in Maguiresbridge and died and was buried there in1867. I don't know the father's or mother's name. That is the family I am looking for. Rutherford was the youngest of 2 siblings, William & Esther(Esther married a Porteus) I am hoping someone can help me. I don't think he is a relative of the above Simon.
