Not much is known about the Smith family other than the information obtained from Caroline’s and Charlotte’s death certificate and from the following information from Caroline’s granddaughter, Charlotte Middleton.
“When asked about Caroline Smith - this is the information she received. She said that they came to Australia from Ireland ( Cork) but very little was known about them. Possibly came because of consumption. She felt that others in the family also knew very little about the girls' background - strange! Caroline died young and the children were brought up by Caroline’s sister Charlotte who never married.
Caroline arrived in Victoria c. 1872 in her early twenties and married Toussaint Victor Dewez in Albury, NSW in 1878. She had four children, Toussaint, Adèle, Eugenie and Gustave.
Eugenie died at the age of eight in 1891 from Typhoid fever . Whether it is simply a coincidence, Caroline died a year later after suffering from cardiac disease for twelve months. One wonders if she died of a ‘broken heart’.
Caroline’s sister Charlotte stepped in to care for the Caroline’s three children, aged 13, 11 and 6 years.
