Stephen wed Mary Walsh on 22 February 1848 at Annakissy, Cork, Ireland.
The couple had two children, Patrick (b. 1850) and John (b. 1852) in Ireland before departing for USA circa 1853.
Upon arrival in NY, NY, USA - they set out across the country share cropping and having children along the way.
A daughter, Bridget, was born in Pennsylvania in 1854.
A second daughter, Mary Ann, was born in Illinois in 1859.
Their last child, Mary Ellen, was born in Lee County, Iowa in 1866.
The Stephen Hayes family reached St. Joseph, MO circa 1875.
Mary Walsh Hayes passed in November of 1879 from injuries incurred after being thrown from a horse drawn wagon.
Stephen suffered the same fate in August, 1882.
