Stephen Barrett (1849-31) born in east Ballinvilla (GV farm 6) to Pat Barrett Jr & Brigid Moraghan, was sponsored out to America at the age of 19 by his brother Mjr. Edward J Barrett.

Stephen arrived in New York on March 11, 1868 (possibly nudged along by a spot of trouble at home, 2 months earlier):

CARRICK-ON-SHANNON PETTY COURT: On 31 January 1868, Stephen Barrett of Ballinvilla was fined 5/- and 1/- costs (or in default imprisonment for 1 month) for commiting an assault on James Burns at Carrick on Shannon on the night of 23 January 1868.

In 1869, he joined his brother  in Pineville, Rapides, and lived with Edward J.  for a while, working as a clerk in his brother's store.

On 22 Oct 1875, when Stephen was 26, he married Elizabeth Jane aka  Lizzie Ball (b.1858) at Arcadia.

Lizzie & Stephen had 9  children:

Stephen Barrett was elected to the Pineville Town Council in May 1880. By then, Stephen Sr. was a “merchant” of his own merit and proprieter of a General Merchandice store at #809 Pineville (house and shop).

On 10th Jan 1885 he was charged with carrying concealed weapons (no appearance) – not an unusual charge for the time. In April 1885 he served as a Juror in the District Court.

From 1918-21, he was the only Barrett adult resident in Pineville (the other brothers having died or moved to Alexandria). The Pineville-Alexandria Tornado of April 4, 1923 all but destroyed Main Street, but Stephen's enterprise managed to recover.

In 1929 Stephen Barrett (age 80) was the vice-president of Hustmyre Co. Inc. which was run by his son-in-law (Sibbie’s husband). He was residing at 811 Main St. with his shop still at #809.

By 1930 Stephen was a widower, living with his daughter Henry, and grand-daughter, Anna, at 811 Main St, Pineville (in a house worth $15,000). In 1931, his son, Stephen Jr and daughter-in-law Bessie, were living nearby at 816 Main St.

Stephen's wife, Lizzie Ball Barrett died on 05 Jan 1930. Stephen Sr. died a year later on 19 Apr 1931, age 82. A local newspaper described Stephen as “a prominent and influential citizen of Pineville”.  He was survived by only one son, Stephen Jr. and 5 daughters. Tragically, Stephen Jr., a local hero (fireman and semi-pro baseball player), followed his father just a few months later.
