Back to List

My great-grandfather Stephen Ryan, came to the USA in 1848/50. He moved to the state of Indiana, I'm not sure if he went straight from the ship to Indiana. I don't know the ship name or where he got on the ship in Europe or where he landed in the United States.  Living in Daviess County Indiana he worked for the B & O Railroad. He met and married Catherine Maher. They lived in Washington, Daviess County, Indiana. After their children,  Mary (May), John, Annie, William Sherman, Patrick and Stephen (maybe more) were born, the family moved to Arkansas. They lived in Craighead County Arkansas. They might also have lived in Poinsett County. Stephen died 10-July-1916 in Craighead County and was buried in Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery in Jonesboro, Ark.  I was told that his 2 brothers also came to the USA. I don't know if all three came together, went to the same place and what  was the name of the brothers. A cousin of mine told me that the brother's names might have been John and Patrick.  I knew Stephen's son, he was my great-uncle Stephen Leo Ryan, but I was a lot younger and not yet interested in genealogy and never even thought to  ask him questions until it was too late and he had passed on.

If any of this sounds familiar and you know something about my g-grandfather, please contact me.  Carol Ryan Cannon  crcannon1@yahoo.com
