  • Hello Robert:

I will gladly accept any help I can get. I have searched long and hard for information on Stephen/Steven Black and his wife Mary Stevenson. I do have an 1829 Tithe Applotment record listing a Steven Black in Glenburrisk, Pomeroy and also a Thomas Black, who could be his brother or father. The other record I have is the marriage bond from 1830 showing a marriage in the Diocese of Armagh, but it does not list their parents names. Not knowing the parents names has been the major stumbling block. Their first child was born in Ontario Canada in 1831 so they must have emigrated shortly after marriage. I have been able to trace their history well in Canada but not back in Ireland. They were my 2nd paternal great-grandparents.

    Thanks,

    Jim Noble

    Hi Jim,

Thanks for your message,  Strangely my younger brother bought a farm from our uncle Thomas Watt ( my father's brother) in Glenburrisk, Pomeroy in about 1973, His son still lives on the farm. The neighbouring farm had been owned by a family of Blacks away back in the 1930s.

I have access to over 20 different family trees, One of them shows a Thomas Black a farmer in Co. Tyrone born in 1800, he had a son Thomas Black born in 1838 in Co. Tyrone, he married Mary Ann Gray.   Another record shows a Thomas Black born at Kildress, Cookstown, Co. Tyrone he died in 1932, Kildress is about 9 miles from Glenburrisk.

Which Black's name is on the marriage paper of 1830? Steven or Thomas?   It was quite normal for a young married couple to leave Ireland within a few days of getting married.

The marriage record stating the "Dioceses of Armagh" does not mean they were married at or near Armagh, It simply means that the Church where they got married in was in the Diocese of Armagh, Our Church the Presbyterian Church at Pomeroy is in the Diocese of Armagh although Armagh City is nearly 40 miles away.

The more names and dates I can have the more I can help.

    Regards from Robert

  • Hi Robert:

Yes, that is a coindidence for sure. It is Steven's name that appears on the marriage record. I understand about the Dioces of Armagh and what it means. My understanding is that the Church marriage records (Church of Ireland & Presbyterian) for Pomerory were destroyed by fire. But if such is the case, I am not sure how the marriage index record was created, which I found on Family Search.org.  You should be able to access the marriage bond record as I attached it to Steven's short biography on this site.

Thomas would have had to be a brother of Steven given Steven was born in 1799. The key here is what was the Father & Mother's names. Does your Thomas Black tree(s) show any brothers? Or does in show the names of Thomas's parents?

Steven & his wife Mary Stevenson's first child was Robert born 1831 in Ontario, Canada and his second child was a son, Thomas, born 1831. Given the Irish naming patterns of the day, Steve's father's name might have been Robert.

I am away from tomorrow (Sat.) through Oct. 2nd and won't have Internet availability, but when I get back I will check this message board. Thank you for your efforts.

    Jim

  • Hi Robert:

Just wondering if you have been able to find out anything further? Maybe you brother's son could ask the Black's on the farm next to his if they have any knowledge?

    Thanks,

    Jim Noble

  • Hello Jim,

Thanks for your message, unfortunately,  the Black's farm I spoke of was away back in the 1950 / 60s when I lived in Co. Tyrone,  (I have lived in Southern England for 56 years) and the farm was sold then because the remaining Black family members moved away.

I will ask my nephew if he knows anything about the Black family.

It is best that we communicate via email, I am at    rwdwatt@gmail.com

    From Robert.
