Susan Mangan 1843

Back to List

Susan Mangan (or possibly Mangin) was born about 1843 in “Queens County”, County Laois, probably to Thomas, a farm labourer, and his wife Mary.  They came as assisted immigrants to New Zealand aboard the Metropolis, arriving in Lyttelton, the port for Christchurch, on 18 June 1863. With them was another Susan, possibly a cousin.

In October 1864 Susan, 22,  married James Dawson, a malster, in Christchurch, and they had 10 children.

They both died about 1824 and are buried together in Sydenham Cemetery, Christchurch, NZ.  Their great-granddaughter Christine would love to know more about them, as nothing has been found of the family after their arrival, and nothing is known about their origins.

The photo is of Susan and James, probably on their wedding day.

Additional Information

  • Hi Christine, I know quite a lot about her history in New Zealand, but nothing about that in Ireland. Contact me on davegdawson@gmail.com.
