Back to List

On 11 Feb 1855, Theresa married Thomas Igoe in Templemichael, County Longford.   The newlyweds left shortly after for the US and arrived in the City of Charleston, Charleston Co, South Carolina.  There they started their family & built their life.

The first of their children to be born was John b. abt. 1858.  He was followed by James Joseph b. 7 Jul 1859 who grew-up to become a locally famous pilot, ship's master & Harbor Commisioner for Charleston.  Next was Thomas Francis, Jr. b. 9 Jan 1863 and last was  Mary Ann who would never know her father (see Thomas Igoe for more on this) b. 8 Nov 1864.

Sadly, Thomas & Theresa's marriage was cut short by ill health for Thomas which ultimately resulted in his becoming a prisoner of war during 1864 & dying in a POW prison in New York City between his capture & the end of the war in the spring of 1865.  It's unknown at what point Theresa learned of Thomas' death but on 2 Sept 1865, widow Theresa applied for Letters of Administration to settle her late husband's estate.

Theresa remarried Edward Donnelly (b. 15 Oct 1836 Ireland) the following year in 1866.   Edward served not only as a father to Thomas' children but Theresa & he had 4 more.  Rose A. Igoe b. 1869, Francis b. abt. 1873, Theresa b. July 1876 & Joseph P.E.  b. Mar 1878.

Theresa passed away, an old lady of 83yrs on 6 Jan 1920 in Charleston.  She is buried w/her 2nd husband Edward in Saint Lawrence Cemetery, Charleston, Charleston Co, SC.  She leaves behind many descendants in South Carolina & Georgia from her 2 husbands Thomas IGOE & Edward DONNELLY.
