It is believed that Thomas was born about 1794 in Sligo, Ireland.  His parents may have been William Jones Armstrong and Margaret Kearns.

He married Elizabeth "Betsey" Nesbitt. She is the daughter William Nesbitt and Mary Henderson. Mary is said to be William’s 2nd wife.

The date and location of the Armstrong-Nesbitt marriage are unknown.

Betsey was born around 1795.She may be from County Downs, Ireland. However, from her daughter Margaret’s (2nd child) death registry, it states that she was from Sligo, Ireland.Perhaps that was more meant to identify Thomas’ original location?

It is possible that Thomas arrived in Canada, at the port of Québec,  on the Brig  Samuel Ponsonby from Sligo, Ireland.  The vessel arrived July 26, 1821 under Master Parkinson.

According to the ship manifest published in the Montreal Gazette of August 1821, there were 55 settlers onboard.Along with Thomas were George Nesbitt, James Nesbitt, and John Nesbitt. The three Nesbitt are most likely the siblings of Thomas’ wife, Betsey.

They would all settle in Beckwith Township, Ontario, Canada in December 1821.
