Thomas came to America with his parents, Patrick and Honora (O'Connor) when he was very young. They lived in Chicopee, Massachusetts, and worked in the cotton mills. He had a brother Patrick who died at the age of one and was buried in Ireland. He had two sisters, Mary and Margaret, and two more brothers, James and Patrick, who were all born in America. Thomas went on to be a baseball player for a team in Muncie, Indiana. He married Mattie Wampler and had three girls.
