I have traced my ggg-grandfather Thomas Burke (sometimes spelled Bourke) to Loughmore, Tipperary. Some records talk about Rucker, Loughmore, Tipperary and some talk about Loughmore Village, Templemore, Tipperary. I'm not sure if this is because the family has ties to both locations, or if the confusion of the later generations accidentally used them interchangably.
For certain, I have a baptismal record of Thomas Burke, the son of John Burke and Catherine Hamel at the Parish of Loughmore-Castleiney, baptized April 22, 1810, sponsored by Thomas Burke and Margaret Hamel.
I have a copy of the marriage record at the parish for Thomas Burke's marriage to Ellen Carroll on February 22 1841. The wedding is witnessed by Betty Burke and John Wall (Hall?).
Thomas and Ellen had 6 children, I have copies of the baptismal records for 4 of them, all from this parish;

  • Anne Burke- baptized 2 December 1841. She married 18 August 1860 at this parish to John Hickey, apparently a prominent family in the area.
  • Martin Burke- baptized 10 November 1843. Martin married after emigrating to the US, to an first generation american Sarah Alice Flyyn, born to Irish parent John Flynn and Margaret Welch Flynn. My family descends through Martin's line in the US.
  • Ellen "Ellie" Burke- baptized 19 January 1846. Ellie took ill enroute to the United States. It is said she died "not too far from port" and is buried "in the islands".
  • Mary Burke- born 2 July 1848, baptized 10 August 1848 at Tirvoher, Loughmore Village, Templemore, Tipperary. She married Patrick Hickey in the US in 1865. Patrick Hickey is either the brother or cousin of John Hickey, both of Tipperary. John Kichey was born about 1935.
  •  Johanna Burke was baptized 28 August 1850 in this parish. She married a William Flynn of New York in January 1867.
  • John Burke was baptized 13 June 1854 at this parish. He died shortly after the family arrived in the United States.

According to family narratives, Thomas was a farmer who died "sometime after 1854". Ellen then emigrated with her younger children to the Unites States in either 1864 or 1865. Oldest daughter Anne was married to John Hickey, and apparently their migration was arranged by John Hickey's employer William Scully who Hickey's family worked for and Scully chose John Hickey, and thereby his wife Anne and her extended Burke family, to work his land holding in Illinois, USA.

  • Hello I'm curious to know who you are who posted this information; the reason being that Thomas Burke is my great great great grandfather also.  His son Martin Burke is my  great great grandfather and Martin's daughter Margaret Burke Floeschinger is my great grandmother. Her daughter Mary Gwendolyn Floerschinger Schnitker  is my grandmother, and her daughter Barbara Ann Schnitker Boettger is my mother.
    My sister and I are traveling to Ireland this fall and would welcome copies of the baptismal and marriage certificates that you have in hand since we are planning a trip to Loughmore.  I visited there in 2007 and hove photos of the house in Loughmore.  We were pressed for time and that's all we got done.  This time we will do some homework before going, and spend more time there.  Thanks for anything you can share!

  • Hello, always nice to meet a distant cousin. My name is Kathleen. My family traces it's lineage through Martin Burke's son Thomas (my great-grandfather). I have notes about Margaret Alice and her daughter Mary Gwendolyn, but I have their surnames as FloeRchinger, with Margaret marrying Leo Floerchinger in January 1914 in Iowa. I'll have to recheck records for a clarrification on the spelling of the last name. Thank you for bringing that to my attention.
    The family records I personally have trunicate at Martin's son Thomas and his wife Alice Angela Brown, with only a mention of his parents Martin Burke and his wife Sarah Alice Flynn. All the additional records I've collected on the extended family line is through my research. The baptismal records and marriage certificates I have found are documented in the family tree I'm building on FamilySearch.org. Below, please find the ancestor pages for these relatives, I hope you'll be able to see them. If you have a FamilySearch account (it's free) please feel free to add any additional info, records, photos, etc. Please do add the photo of the house in Loughmore, I would LOVE to see it :)

    In the sources section, you'll find the link to the records that I used to compile the bio here above.
    I hope this helps. Jealous of your upcoming trip to Ireland. I moved from Limerick back to the US in 2010, and have missed it desperately since.
    Have a wonderful time exploring!
