I have traced my ggg-grandfather Thomas Burke (sometimes spelled Bourke) to Loughmore, Tipperary. Some records talk about Rucker, Loughmore, Tipperary and some talk about Loughmore Village, Templemore, Tipperary. I'm not sure if this is because the family has ties to both locations, or if the confusion of the later generations accidentally used them interchangably.
For certain, I have a baptismal record of Thomas Burke, the son of John Burke and Catherine Hamel at the Parish of Loughmore-Castleiney, baptized April 22, 1810, sponsored by Thomas Burke and Margaret Hamel.
I have a copy of the marriage record at the parish for Thomas Burke's marriage to Ellen Carroll on February 22 1841. The wedding is witnessed by Betty Burke and John Wall (Hall?).
Thomas and Ellen had 6 children, I have copies of the baptismal records for 4 of them, all from this parish;
- Anne Burke- baptized 2 December 1841. She married 18 August 1860 at this parish to John Hickey, apparently a prominent family in the area.
- Martin Burke- baptized 10 November 1843. Martin married after emigrating to the US, to an first generation american Sarah Alice Flyyn, born to Irish parent John Flynn and Margaret Welch Flynn. My family descends through Martin's line in the US.
- Ellen "Ellie" Burke- baptized 19 January 1846. Ellie took ill enroute to the United States. It is said she died "not too far from port" and is buried "in the islands".
- Mary Burke- born 2 July 1848, baptized 10 August 1848 at Tirvoher, Loughmore Village, Templemore, Tipperary. She married Patrick Hickey in the US in 1865. Patrick Hickey is either the brother or cousin of John Hickey, both of Tipperary. John Kichey was born about 1935.
- Johanna Burke was baptized 28 August 1850 in this parish. She married a William Flynn of New York in January 1867.
- John Burke was baptized 13 June 1854 at this parish. He died shortly after the family arrived in the United States.
According to family narratives, Thomas was a farmer who died "sometime after 1854". Ellen then emigrated with her younger children to the Unites States in either 1864 or 1865. Oldest daughter Anne was married to John Hickey, and apparently their migration was arranged by John Hickey's employer William Scully who Hickey's family worked for and Scully chose John Hickey, and thereby his wife Anne and her extended Burke family, to work his land holding in Illinois, USA.
