Thomas Cody was born 25 May 1820 in Ballyhad to Richard Cody and Bridget Rice. His godparents were Thomas Kelly and Mary Rice. He had at least one sibling, Margaret. Thomas learnt the blacksmith trade and worked in a forge on his land in Ballyhad.
Thomas married his neighbour Emily Myson on 12 Mar 1846. At the time, Emily was pregnant. A few short months later on 28 July 1846, she gave birth to a daughter, Mary Anne.

Thomas appears in Griffiths Valuation in Ballyhad, lower, renting 12 acres for his house and forge and a further one acre of land. He rented this from Reverend William Walker, who in turn rented it from the Earl of Meath. Thomas lived at house 3 in Ballyhad.
Thomas died 11 Mar 1880 of heart disease in his home, witnessed by his daughter Lizzie.
