Thomas was born in Tibohine, Castlerea, Roscommon on January 17, 1814. His father's name was Henry and was born about 1792 in Ireland. Thomas' brother phillip was born in Roscommon in 1818. Thomas joined the military by enlisting in Dublin in 1831 when he was 17 years old. He married Elizabeth Brady in 1838 and had a son James in 1840, a daughter Julia in 1842 and another daughter Mary Ann in 1845 before his last son Thomas was born in 1850. He died June 8, 1891 in Plumstead, London, England.
