Thomas Grady was born in the Claddagh in Galway on the 18th of September 1835.
As a young man, Thomas joined the British military forces. When he was just 19 years old, he was statoined with the 4th Regiment of Foot in the Crimean War.
He was noted for his bravery, and was recognised for two instances in particular.
The first was when he volunteered to repair damage to a Sailor's Battery, even though the act exposed him to heavy fire from the opposition.
The second was when, even though wounded, he insisted on remaining at the front, thereby inspiring the other men with his bravery and composure in the face of the enemy.
For these acts he was awared the Victoria Cross for bravery.
Thomas retired to Australia where he lived for the rest of his days. He died on the 18th of May 1891 and is buried in Melbourne General Cemetery.
