  • Thomas O’Beirn was very particular about how his surname was spelled. With the “O” and no y.  He was born, possibly near Kilcar, Donegal in the late 1830’s, dates vary.  Family oral tradition says he entered the US at New Orleans with a younger brother and another male, Patrick O’Beirn, 18 years older than Thomas, who could have been his older brother or father. I first find evidence of him living near Vicksburg, Mississippi in 1850 with Peter, b.about 1839, and Patrick, b.about 1820, working as a watchman. No mother or female is mentioned in the 1850 US census.  Thomas purportedly grows up in Mississippi and then moves to Will County, Illinois by 1858, when he marries Catherine Devereaux, b. Henryville, Iberville, Quebec, Canada in 1841.  Brother Peter and relative Patrick own property nearby.  By 1878, Thomas and Catherine are in Taylor County, Iowa farming and raising 8 children.  Thomas and Catherine die in Spring, 1919, victims of the Spanish Influenza pandemic
