  • Hi Karen D,

There is record of a James Carroll, Keeraun South, Ballyconneely, Clifden seeking information as to his date of birth. He wrote in August 1921 for the census of 1851 to be checked. He gave his parents names as: Frank and Margaret Carroll, Mannin Beg, Ballindoon parish, Barony of Ballynahinch, Co. Galway. The reply back on August 29th stated that there was no record of his birth and that "Frank and Peggy" MD (Married)  1836. No children shown.

1901 census of Ireland records a "Martin Carroll", retired teacher on Innishnee island. He is aged 80 years and resides with his wife Mary. 1911 census records Mary as a widow, residing on her own with no record of children. Griffith's Valuation taken early 1850's and printed in 1855 has a Michael Carroll and a Peter Carroll in Manninmore and a Francis Carroll in Manninbeg.

In the Clifden area there were a number of marriages in the early 1840's: Valentine Curran to Mary Carroll, 1841, Daniel Carroll to Bridget McDermot, 1841, Mary Carroll to Pat Gorham, 1843, Mary Carroll to Pat Mullen 1843, Mary Carroll to Dan Conneely 1843.

The US census for 1900 has a Valentino Carroll in Suffolk, Ma. Married to Mary and both born in Ireland. He is aged 52 years and married 25 years. There is a similar entry in 1910 where Valentine is recorded as 45 years.

  • Hi there- thanks so much.  you have cleared up some confusion on my part.  I have a copy of the Aug 1921 request from James but did not fully understand what it was.  so now you have confirmed for me their marriage year ( awesome)!  my records show their first child was John born in 1838.  so i wonder is there another Frank and Margaret who are James parents?  it is possible that they are his parents having been married in 1836, right?

Martin & Mary Carroll may be relatives.  the Francis in Mannibeg and on Griffiths is my great-great grandfather.   But I find no birth record for him.  I suspect he was born in some part of the Galway area, as Clifden was likely not yet built.

that Mary Carroll got around!   I have no information on sibings that Francis may have had . . .   again, could be a relative but I just don't know.   I am interested on the one who married Dan Conneely as that may lead to something.

I have all of Valentine Carroll's info from his marriage on.  yes the one you found in Sufflok county is he and his wife Mary ( Mohan).

you have been very helpful    thanks so much   Karen

  • thank you so much!  i wonder if this Mary Carroll who married Dan could be a sibling of Francis Carroll?

The Mary Carroll baptized in 1841 is mine.  But i lost track of her.  some of the other family trees that I have looked at have her in New Zealand, marrying and dying there but I have not found any concrete connection.

Funny that Mary and Dan have 2 sets of twins- twins run in my Carroll family too!

    thanks again

  • Hi Karen,

Dan Conneely's address is Mannin, but it did not state if it was Manninmore or Manninbeg. Francis Carroll is Manninbeg. It was common for a brother and sister to marry into the same family in rural Ireland and similar with cousins. My paternal grandfather and his younger brother married first cousins. The cousins were only a few hundred yards away from the brothers. That was in the 1880's and one pair had been to Boston and returned to marry!

Now that you have created this family post, you may get information from other family members.

    Best Wishes,

    McCoy
