My Great Grandfather William Carney (also seen in records as Kearney) is seated at the bottom left of this picture.  I assume his wife Annie (Harney) Carney is in this photo, but she passed before my mother was born in 1945, so we do not know who she would be.  Very interested to know who the woman in the top right with the white sweater is, I have several other pictures of her.  I originally thought she was Annie, but one picture is time stamped 1961 so it could not be here.  Wondering if she is a Carney, Harney, Heavey or Hannon (or just from one of the neighboring families).  Would also love to know if anyone recognizes anyone else in this photo.

They lived in Kinclare, outside of Caltra, County Galway (William was born in Esker Ballycahil to parents Thomas Carney and Peggy Heavy, Thomas' father was James Carney or possibly Kearney).  There were 4 families who lived in this area, the Carney's, Booth's, Kelly's (I think) and I can't remember the 4th.

William and Annie went on to have 11 children. One child died as a baby.  Marie, Bridgette (Bridie), Margaret (Peggy), Anne, went to Boston one at a time during the 1920's.  Ellen (Nellie), Sarah (Sadie), Noreen and William went to England during the early 1930's.  Joseph inherited the Harney family farm in Kilclooney near Ballinasloe.  Thomas stayed and raised his family of 5 with wife Molly Hannon on the family farm in Kinclare.

Thomas and Molly's oldest Ann (my mother) came to Boston when she was 16 to live where one of her aunts.  The other 4 (Liam, Marion, Gerard and Bernadette) stayed and most still live in the Caltra area, as well as their children and grandchildren.  Liam still works the family farmland in Kinclare.

  • I have a 1932 picture of young Tommy Carney with Inichne McLaughlin on a cart taken during my grandmother’s visit to her home near Caltra. Her mother was Catherine Booth who had married Patrick Kelly. During that time her home was near Tyrell’s but my cousin from Kinclare told me the Booths lived up the lane from them at a place that had an Irish name.

  • That's great!  Is it possible for you to send it to me?  email is colleen02453@gmail.com

I remember the Booth's fondly (Eddie and Nora) lived just around the bend.  We visited Kinclare every few years growing up.   We are planning a large Carney reunion at the Shearwater in August.
