William Courtney may have been born about 1797. The only reference to a William Courtney of about his age was in the 1821 census of the townland of Crucat, parish of Kilmore, county of Armagh - age 24, labourer, living with his widowed mother Elizabeth at house number 11. If the age at which he died was correct he would have been born in 1793, making him well into his forties when he married Maria Hewitt in 1842. He may have been a widower. The Griffiths Valuation of about 1865 shows he rented a house in the townland of Bottlehill from George Hewitt. At his death in 1870 he was a weaver, aged 77.
