William Flynn married to Johanna O'Donnell. They emigrated to the USA and settled in Dubuque Iowa. Their eldest child (Ellen) was born in 1850 in Iowa. According to the 1860 US Census there was also a Mich and Margaret Flynn as well as Ellen Flynn with daughter Elizabeth living near them. Among the others in the Dubuque Iowa census living near the Flynn's of that time were the following family's from Ireland; Barry's (Johanna and children), James and Jane Crawford, Mich and Nancy Corbet, Chas (Charles) and Mary Beattie, and Pat and Anne Glennan.

William and Johanna's daugher Anna (1856-1904) married James O'Farrell (born in Ireland ~1850-1928, location unknown). Their daughter Bernice O'Farrell was my Great-Grandmother.

  • Hi there

We show a William Flynn was born Abbeyfeale 1823 but we show 4 other people with the same name born in the area around the time; There is a mention of some of the Abbeyfeale  Flynns in the Griffiths valuation pages 42 & 51, there is a good explanation of these papers on this IreladXo site you might like up. The William that I have from Abbeyfeale actually emigrated to Duboque Iowa in June 1849 with Johanna (born abt 1827) and had daughters Ellen (Ella) 1850; Anna 1857 and son William 1860 and Bridget Teresa 1862:

I have found no records of Johanna O'Donnell in the Parisdh of Abbeyfeale of her birth or marriagealthough I do have one to match the name born 2.9.1827 baptized Galbally & Aherlow Limerick & Tipperary parents Jame O'Donnell & Mary Butler

You might get a better idea of which Flynns you are researching by going into the arrival papers; they would have sailed probably via Liverpool

There is 3,680 William Flynns in Limerick in and around the year 1826 and 2,749 Johanna O'Donnell

If you can link into teh National Library of Ireland you might glean something more or Roots.ie will certainly be able to help you.

So the slightest bit of definate information will make a big difference to searches

Good Luck in your search, I am sorry that I cannot help at this stage

That is indeed the family! i would be grateful to know by what means you found that as well as the "Jame O'Donnell & Mary Butler" information as well.

How did you access page 42 & 51 of the Griffiths evaluation? When i search "William Flynn" in Limerick askaboutireland.ie there are  7 matches, none of which are in Abbeyfeale.

Any recommendations regarding searching arrival papers?

    Go raibh mile maith agat!
