He was born in 1789 in Boyle Roscommon. He joined the 52nd Regiment of Foot around 1806 and served for 7 years 11 months. He lost an arm in the Peninsula War at the Battle of Cuidad. He married Elleanor Brennan at Elphin, Roscommon on the 12th February 1814. They had probably four or five children. One of them Susan McElroy born 1824 in Boyle Roscommon moved to Engalnd and married Thomas Henry Smythe on the 23rd December 1824. He is my great, great, great grandfather. With only one arm he must have been remembered.
