William Toneycliffe of Cavetown (1861-1936) converted to Catholicism in order to marry his wife, Mary McNamara of Cloonshaghan in 1880. In 1873, he is recorded as being of Glooria.
On January 1, 1881, William Tonycliff with 3 in family was evicted by Guy Lloyd Esq. The Croghan branch of the Land League applied for a £3 grant for him. Tenant was put in as caretaker and the farm remained untaken. By the Census of 1901, this family are recorded in Cavetown (where the Tonycliffs had resided for most of the 19th Century).
He was the son of Anne Connor (1821-1892) of Glooria & John Tonycliff (1828-1923) aka Tonyclift aka Toniclif of CAVETOWN [GV#11a, #13] who was a Protestant laborer. His parents first settled in Glooria circa 1845-47 and had moved to Cavetown by 1850. His ancestors had long been in the parish of Estersnow: John & Brigid Tonyciff (grandparents); Robert & Sarah Tonycliff (great-grandparents).
